How to Read a Recipe

The recipes in this cookbook have been set up in a unique, step-by-step format. So, it is important to read through the entire recipe first, to make sure you have all the ingredients and understand the preparation sequence. Here's an example:

Italian Sausage with
Peppers and Onions

Olive oil, as needed 1 ½ pounds mild or hot Italian sausage links cut into 1" rounds

Coat bottom of a large, deep skillet with olive oil. Brown the sausage over medium-high heat.

2 cups onion, sliced
2 cups green or red Bell peppers, sliced
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 tablespoon garlic, minced

While continuing to cook over medium-high heat, mix into the sausage the above ingredients and cook for 8 minutes.

2 cups marinara sauce (pastas/Sauces, page 1)
Fresh parsley, finely minced (For Garnish)
Parmesan Cheese, grated (For Garnish)

Stir in the marinara sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with parsley and parmesan cheese.

All the ingredients for the recipe are in boldface and are slightly indented. Those items that you need to prepare first are listed followed by the instructions. The ingredients needed next are then listed, again followed by instructions for those items, possibly including the previously prepared portion. And so on until you have prepared the entire delicious recipe and are ready to serve.
